Ads! Ads! Ads! Ads!
What Do You Know?
Ask the students: How many of you have seen advertisements? What are some of
these advertisements for? Are they trying to sell you something? Together, we are going to watch an online advertisement, also referred to as a commercial, and see what kinds of emotions or themes the video has."
Show the below link to the students.

After viewing the video, ask the students the following questions: "What did you notice about this video*? What do you think the mood or tone of this is? What helped you to decide the tone or mood of the commercial? Was it the music? What the characters were doing? Even though it was not in English, could you still tell what the commercial was about/what it was trying to sell?" Some students responses might be: "the video was funny," "there was happy music playing," "it looked like the babies were having fun," "it was not in English but I think they were trying to sell 'Kit Kat' bars."
*This commercial was released by the Nestle S.A. company, as an advertisement for their "Kit Kat" chocolate bars. I did not create this commercial or video, and for this curriculum it is only to be used for educational purposes in an elementary school classroom.

Taking a Closer Look!
The students will now have the opportunity to think like advertisement/commercial designers!
"Today, each of you will be given a random item that you will be asked to sell. You will also be given an "emotion card," which has an emotion written on it. Your task is to create an advertisement about your item, in the tone of the mood card you have selected. Take 2 minutes and think about the emotion card you have selected. How can you convey that emotion through your storyboard? Through music? Through the setting? Through the actions of the characters in the commercial? Now take 2 minutes to think about your product. Do you know what it looks like? What is it used for? Why do people need it?"
"We will be using a digital storytelling storyboard website to help us, called 'Storyboard That'*. There are three slides in the storyboard--one for the beginning, middle, and end of your advertisement. You will be given about 35 minutes to design your storyboard for your commercial. Afterwards, we will share out and see some of your examples.
When the students share out, have them explain what is going on and what product they are selling. Then ask the rest of the students: Was the message conveyed easily? Could you tell what product was being sold?
*I did not design the "StoryBoard That" website.

In a World. . .
Using the storyboards that the students have created, they will now transform the storyboard into a commercial. Using the iMovie application**, students will create a short 30-45 second commercial about their product, again keeping in mind the setting, the music used, and the characters or people in the commercial. There is a rubric* attached, so students know what to look for when designing their commercial.
**The iMovie application is a product of the Apple company. I did not create this application, and for this curriculum it is only to be used for educational purposes in an elementary school classroom.
*This rubric was designed using the "rubistar" website. Under the "Multimedia"category button, there is the option for a rubric on digital Storytelling. The rubrics on the website are able to be edited, so if the category is too vague or specific it can altered. I have attached a sample of the rubric I felt would be best suited for this activity. I did not create the "rubistar" website.
