Conceptual Overview:
Technology is very prevalent in today’s society. There is easy access to programs like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and many other social media sites that students are repeatedly exposed to. This curriculum, created for the 5th grade classroom with 1 to 1 iPads, was designed to help students access various applications and successfully incorporate them into the classroom in a meaningful way. This particular unit of study focuses in on how to use multimedia as a tool for expressing a particular perspective in a fictional text or story, as well as how students can interpret various media exposure in their own lives.
This curriculum is loosely based on a specific English and Language Arts fifth grade standard.

Analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text (e.g., graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth, poem).

What evidence shows that students understand?
In the modules, students are able to:
EXPLAIN: Students distinguish between myth, poem, and other text in order to express and infer the inner emotions of characters.
EMPATHIZE: Students infer how characters are feeling during important events, and synthesize that knowledge in their own way.
APPLY: Students experiment with a variety of iPad applications, and using their knowledge, decide which application will help them accurately convey their perspective.
INTERPRET: Students critically analyze media and various iPad applications to determine the point of view of multimedia presentations.
GAIN PERSPECTIVE: Students determine how a point of view is developed or influenced by technology.
GAIN SELF KNOWLEDGE: Students reflect on how the media has influenced their own lives and shifted their perspectives.
Activities:
Each activity contains three specific sections: 'What Do You Know?', 'Taking a Closer Look!,' and 'In a World. . .'. The 'What Do You Know?' segment introduces students to the main idea for each activity, and serves as a scaffold for the students. The 'Taking a Closer Look!' segment pushes students to dig deeper into the content, to see what the idea is all about. The students are doing more of the heavy lifting in the hopes that they will take ownership over the materials and become more engaged. Finally, the 'In a World. . .' segment is the assessment portion of the activity. It is meant to be an extension and serve as an application to real-world scenarios.
Time Required:
The entire length of modules 1 and 2 should last about 3 weeks in the classroom.
